it should be interesting when the behind the scenes story on this resignation/firing comes to light. was he purged by the white house faction that wanted gitmo closed months ago? was he being too slow, or too careful? or was he having second thoughts about the entire idea once he actually saw what kind of people are at gitmo?
White House legal counsel Greg Craig steps down amid charges he botched planned Gitmo closingWASHINGTON - Greg Craig stepped down as White House legal counsel Friday after months of complaints from insiders who said he bungled the closing of the terror prison at Guantanamo Bay.
Craig's resignation was announced as the Justice Department readied plans to transfer some prisoners from Gitmo to the U.S. mainland.
He will be replaced by Bob Bauer, a partner at Washington law firm Perkins Cole and the husband of Obama communications director Anita Dunn.
Bauer also is Obama's longtime personal attorney.
"Greg Craig is a close friend and trusted adviser who tackled many tough challenges as White House counsel," President Obama said in a statement.
"Because of Greg's leadership, we have confirmed the first Latina justice on the Supreme Court, set the toughest ethics standards for any administration in history, and ensured that we are keeping the nation secure in a manner that is consistent with our laws and our values."
