Homegrown hate groups increase in number
Civil rights group blames recession, election of first black president

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - On a recent Saturday afternoon, hate was on the march in St. Louis. About 85 members of the National Socialist Movement (NSM), the nation’s largest neo-Nazi group, gathered in the shadow of the famed Gateway Arch for a march and rally celebrating its 35th anniversary.

Clad in all black, with their pants tucked into tightly laced combat boots, the group carried swastika flags and signs urging immigrants to leave the country. They chanted “Sieg Heil,”  a popular rallying cry in World War II Germany, accompanied by a Nazi salute: one arm outstretched, fingers tightly joined, palms facing down.

Their critics say that groups like NSM are the faces of homegrown hate, something the NSM denies. They instead call themselves a “white civil rights organization.” Its ultimate goal is to whitewash America. If they had their way, U.S. citizenship would be limited to “those of pure white blood”; minorities would live in the country as guests. All Jewish people and gays would be forced to leave and immigration would be prohibited.

The SPLC has been tracking hate groups for almost 30 years. In its spring 2009 Intelligence Report, they found that 926 hate groups are currently operating in the U.S., an all-time high. These groups include the Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazis, racist skinheads and Black separatists.

Potok attributes this rise in hate groups to the recession, the election of the nation’s first black president, and the immigration debate.

“We’re looking at a kind of perfect storm of factors that really favor the continued growth of these groups,” he says.

Last month the Department of Homeland Security issued a report on the expansion of right wing extremist groups, saying those organizations are being fueled by the economic downturn and the election of Barack Obama.

But experts say it is the immigration debate that is most significantly contributing to the rise of hate groups, an issue that is exacerbated by the shaky economy.

“These groups have really successfully exploited the immigration issue,” Potok says. “For them it’s ‘brown skin people are coming into this country to destroy us.’”

yeah, I can see how that can happen.  especially when you count veterans, gun owners, and republicans in general as "homegrown hate groups".     Shocked

and the "hate group watchers" will probably the sort of people that will be in charge of the census.  Undecided     oh, wait, that would be ACORN.  my bad.

Considering an anti-Semite just shot up the Holocaust museum today, and an abortion doctor was assassinated just weeks ago, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say this isn't a completely off the wall report.

you left out the army private that was shot to death by the muslim convert immediately after the tiller murder.  he justified his killing of the young man on the because of the US military presence in the middle east.

and wasn't the president's former preacher just today condeming the jews?  and the whacko that shot the guard at the holocaust museum was also a 9/11 truther.  not exactly your average bush voter, I would think.  vile, evil, hateful people cover the political spectrum pretty evenly, mia.

Yes, hate grows regardless of political spectrum.

BTW, he may have been a  9/11 truther, but he was also a member of Free Republic, so I doubt he was a Gore/Kerry/Obama supporter either, probably Ron Paul if I had to guess.

was he?  I didn't know that.  do they know that for sure?  the shooting is being universally condemned over there.  the fact that a crackpot may have been registered at FR says more about the internet than FR.

maybe we should close the internet.  it's full of crackpots. Grin

Yes, he was posted all over there.  They've deleted it, just like Dr. Tiller's murderer was also a member of FR and his posts were also deleted.

And agreed, all of us on the internets are at least a little crackpot.  Heh

Edited to add:  I'm not a member, nor would I be, of FR.  I read half of one thread (it has over 400 posts, and I read around 250 of them) there today a "breaking" story, and while it was only one thread, there was a few prayers, but mostly "I bet it's a muzzie," "he must be mentally ill" (after his age is reported), "this is Obama's fault b/c he hates Jews," a few things thrown in there about Sotomayor as well, a long rants against Shep Smith on FOX.  I'm of no interest to look any further.
