Now that the international community
is trying to stop all nuclear power............WILL THEY STOP IRAN NOW?

One more thing I noticed.....CNN demanding accountability from the government of Japan.  (a reporter they have has been doing this.) Yet they do nothing about their own government.

oh, I am sure that the obamites will insist upon unilaterally nuclearizing first as an example to the rest of the world.  I'm sure the rest of the world will follow.  they have followed our lead on every other liberal wet dream that we have tried during the era of Teh One.

and the media is so hysterically opposed to nuclear power that they would demand transparency from their own mother if their mother bought a nuclear toaster.  although, ironically, I don't recall that same dress wetting at the soviets during chernobyl.

or they could just mandate solar powered cars.  it would result in a calamity, but it would make as much sense as mandating health insurance.

As far as I know Obama hasn't changed his stance on nuclear energy.  The last I read, and yes I have been busy working today, progressives/liberals (which aren't "obamites") were pissed that Obama wasn't shutting down every nuclear reactor in the US.

Obama defends nuclear energy
President says U.S. is 'constantly upgrading' its approach to nuclear safety
March 16, 2011
MSNBC

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama on Tuesday defended the use of nuclear energy despite the calamity in Japan where a nuclear power plant leaked radiation in the wake of a devastating earthquake and tsunami.

The president said facilities in the U.S. are closely monitored and built to withstand earthquakes, even though nothing's failsafe. Proponents of nuclear power fear their efforts to win over the public to the safety of their industry have been dealt a tremendous blow by the disaster in Japan.

I think it is very important to make sure that we are doing everything we can to insure the safety and effectiveness of the nuclear facilities that we have," the president said in a second TV interview Tuesday, with KOAT in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

"We've got to budget for it. I've already instructed our nuclear regulatory agency to make sure that we take lessons learned from what's happening in Japan and that we are constantly upgrading how we approach our nuclear safety in this country," he said.

The president told Pittsburgh television station KDKA that all energy sources have their downsides but that the U.S. — which gets 20 percent of its electricity from nuclear power — needs to look at the full array of them.

Obama pledges $8 billion for new nuclear reactors
LA Times

The move represents a new federal commitment to the low-carbon-emitting, but highly controversial, sector long championed by Republicans. Environmentalists voice concern.

February 16, 2010|By Jim Tankersley and Michael Muskal

Seeking common ground with Republicans on energy and climate issues, President Obama on Tuesday pledged $8 billion in loan guarantees needed to build the first U.S. nuclear reactors in nearly three decades.

The move, along with a tripling of nuclear loan guarantees in the president's budget, represents a new federal commitment to the low-carbon-emitting, but highly controversial, nuclear power sector long championed by the GOP.

Industry groups and Republican leaders praised the announcement, which has been expected for months, but some environmentalists and free-market think tanks protested.

Speaking at a training center at the Lanham, Md., headquarters of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 26, the president spoke favorably of nuclear power as part of a mix of energy alternatives to oil.

Now did something actually change or are you just speculating?

you beat much of the MSM to the punch.  they are just now reporting that allowing a backwards, seismically active country like iraq to build nuke plants out of paper mache and chicken wire wouldn't be a great idea, safety wise.

neither.  I don't trust him to hold to a position in the first place.

and, for the record, candidate obama's position on nuclear power varied with the crowd that he was speaking in front of.  it was one of those obama-esque "yes, but  . . . " bits of trickery that was so hopelessly riddled with exceptions and exemptions that it could mean anything that he wanted it to mean.  it was the equivalent of voting "present".

and killing yucca mountain wasn't exactly an enthusiastic endorsement of nuclear power;  it also created another one of those head-scratching situations where one obama policy completely defeated another obama policy.  you can't build 10 billion bucks worth of nuke power plants if you refuse to store the waste anyplace.  these things just cannot exist simultaneously.

Now did something actually change or are you just speculating?

I assume the term Obamites means those that support Obama.  There are plenty of people on the left that do not support Obama, especially on nuclear energy.

I actually intended "obamites" to refer to members of the obama administration.  but I admit that I have used the term carelessly at times.  hey, it's my word.  I'll use it as I please. Grin

$ 8 billion...big whoop!!  That would barely break ground on ONE PLANT!

My guess is that it would run $20 billion today to build a nuclear plant...at least.
