Number of missing following Wash. mudslide drops to 30, death toll rises to 18

Authorities in rural Washington state said late Saturday that the number of people believed missing following a deadly mudslide had plummeted to 30 as rescue workers and other residents of the mountain community of Oso marked one week since the tragedy.

Officials had previously set the number of missing people at 90, but said they expected that figure to drop dramatically as they worked to find people and cross-referenced a list that included partial reports and duplicates.

The confirmed death toll rose by one, to 18, Jason Biermann, program manager at the Snohomish County Department of Emergency Management, said at a Saturday evening briefing.

Authorities have recovered more than two dozen bodies -- including one on Saturday -- but they aren't added to the official tally until a formal identification is made.

When he saw the devastation that he narrowly avoided, he quickly went to help. Authorities warned him off, but something was calling to him.

It was the cries of an infant lost among the debris.

DARRINGTON, Wash. ? Many of the dogs that have been essential in the search for victims of the deadly mudslide that buried the mountainside community of Oso will take a two-day break after long hours in the cold and rain, rescue crews said Sunday.

The dogs can lose their sensing ability if overworked, officials said.

"The conditions on the slide field are difficult, so this is just a time to take care of the dogs," said Kris Rietmann, a spokeswoman for the team working on the eastern portion of the slide, which hit March 22 about 55 miles northeast of Seattle and is one of the deadliest in U.S. history.

Dogs from the Federal Emergency Management Agency that arrived more recently will continue working, said Heidi Amrine, another spokeswoman for the operation.

Washington landslide death toll rises to 27

(CNN) -- The death toll in last month's massive landslide in rural Washington state has risen to 27, up three from the last count, the Snohomish County medical examiner's office said Tuesday.

That aligns with information authorities released a day earlier, when three bodies were discovered in the 640-acre debris field left after the landslide in Snohomish County. Authorities have not been immediately adding newly discovered bodies to the official toll, instead waiting until they are identified and their families notified.

Twenty-two people still are missing, down from 30 on Monday, authorities said.

Authorities so far have released the names of 19 victims, ranging in age from 4 months to 71 years.

The 19th name, Brandy L. Ward, was released Tuesday. Ward, 58, of Arlington, died of multiple blunt force injuries, the medical examiner's office said.

Dog walked miles to Washington landslide where former owner is missing

An injured golden retriever found Thursday at the scene Washington's deadly landslide appears to have walked for miles to get to the location where his onetime owner was last seen, authorities said.

KING5.com reported that Boomer was found there with injuries to his leg and hip. A veterinarian told the station that it appeared he walked three miles from his current home to get to the debris.

The dog's current owner told the station that her brother is missing in the landslide and he once owned the dog.

Meanwhile, the number of confirmed deaths in the Washington state mudslide has risen to 30.

The Snohomish County medical examiner's office said Thursday that 67-year-old Gloria Halstead and 13-year-old Jovon E. Mangual, both of Arlington, died of multiple blunt force injuries in the accident.

There was a glimmer of light at the site of the Oso landslide on Thursday. Nearly two weeks after the devastating landslide that killed dozens of people, a dog made his way through the debris field and was found.

The Golden Retriever named Boomer had cuts on his legs and has some hip problems, but other than that he was doing well at Arlington Veterinary Hospital.

Initially it was thought Boomer was a landslide survivor and that his owners had perished, but the veterinarian who treated Boomer's injuries said he was in contact with Boomer's owner and the dog is not a landslide survivor.

Medical examiner: All victims of mudslide found so far have been identified

EVERETT, Wash., April 11 (UPI) -- All 36 victims of the Washington State mudslide whose bodies have been found have been positively identified, officials said Friday.

The Snohomish County Medical Examiner said the confirmed death toll remained at 36. Three victims were identified Thursday and one Friday.

The victims include Denver Harris, 14, Mark Gustafson, 55, Bonnie Gullikson, 91, and Michael Pearson, 74.

EVERETT, Wash. ? The death toll from the mudslide that hit the Washington town of Oso has risen to 39.

The Snohomish County medical examiner?s office announced two more victims Wednesday and said it?s trying to identify three of the bodies.

The sheriff?s office still lists seven people as missing from the March 22 landslide that buried dozens of homes in the community about 55 miles northeast of Seattle.

Recovery workers with dogs are probing the debris, and the state Transportation Department is making plans to clear a mile-long stretch of Highway 530 that is covered with mud and trees up to 25 feet deep.
