at least someone in government is being honest about why and how GM and Chrylser were strung along with federal money until they could be fed to the UAW.  a lot of people thought it was a conservative overreaction to fear that all cars would be obamobiles and pelosiwagons within the next few years.

not so much, I think.

Harkin wants ethanol measures in climate bill

Washington, D.C. - Sen. Tom Harkin said he wants Congress to use a climate bill to force auto companies to make new cars and trucks capable of running on 85 percent ethanol as well as conventional gasoline.

"We own the automobile companies. Why not? I think that will be an easy one," Harkin said Thursday, referring to the government interests in Chrysler and General Motors.

Energy Secretary Steven Chu said recently that all new vehicles should be equipped to run on E85. GM, Chrysler and Ford have been voluntarily making some E85-capable cars and trucks for years but have resisted being required to fit all cars for the fuel.

Ethanol is bullsh*t.  It's made from corn and practically all our food is made from corn.  So have alternative fuel, but less food (or just higher and higher food costs).

Ethanol is a loser all the way around.  I'd respect them more if they were wanting to fund the research into making algae into fuel.

Using a highly used food source for fuel is stupid.  Beyond stupid.

They can do much better than using corn, like using algae.  And moving to renewable resources is a good thing, just not when the renewable source is the main product of most of our food.

Here's an interesting article on the algae and how it would work, and not by skimming lakes.  Smiley

Did you read the article?  It can be feasible.  And we don't eat algae so it's already one up on corn.  Wink

The basic problem with ethanol is that it is made from corn.  We need another source that we're not so dependent upon as a food source.

the basic problem is what we consider "renewable"

A couple of years ago there were shortages of corn tortillas, which is a main food staple in mexico, due to increased use of corn for ethanol. Cant you just see the dems saying 'Ok I know how much you love your cars but you are just going to have to cut back so our good friends to the south have plenty of tortillas...' My fear is this is just part of an overall plan of the dems to control transportation and travel within our own borders. Imagine having to apply to a govt agency for a passport to travel to see aunt Mabel in Peoria. Sounds far fetched you say? Why do dems push public transportation so much? Maybe because it is always the govt that controls it?
