aside from avoiding general gaffes, he is avoiding the national media because every time he speaks his position on national issues (healthcare, stimulus, budget, cap and trade) he makes himself that much more unpopular with nevada voters. the national democrat agenda just doesn't fly in his home state. ironically, gaining large majorities in the house and senate along with winning the white house, which has enabled a liberal statist agenda, may have been the final nail in the coffin of his senate career.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has limited his exposure to the national media since Congress returned from the August recess by canceling three of his weekly news conferences.
Traditionally, the Senate Democratic leader has held pen-and-pad sessions on Thursdays, giving reporters their most extended time to question him and his leadership team.
Reid’s senior spokesman, Jim Manley, said the Democratic leader is not deliberately limiting his exposure. Instead, Reid is seeking other ways to get his message out.
Manley said Reid has also given speeches on the Senate floor and engaged in debate with other senators, in addition to some news conferences.
