Ruth was probably the greatest player in baseball history. Originally a left handed pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, Ruth established a record for scoreless innings in the world Series that was not broken until Whitey Ford did it. Ruth even pitched several times for the Yankees. Ruth, the man who resurrected baseball after the Black Sox Scandal, also established a single season home run record [60] that wasn't broken until 1961 [Roger Maris]. Many of Ruth's other records still stand today. Ruth died in 1948 of throat cancer. His number [3] was retired by the Yankees. It should have been retired throughout professional baseball. |
