Rebel commander Igor Strelkov - widely believed in Kiev to be a serving Russian military intelligence officer - tweeted a boastful message about shooting down a military plane shortly before Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 was downed.

The tweet indicated his rebels had shot down an Antonov-26 military plane of the Ukrainian Air Force. The Antonov is a large transport plane of a type used by Ukraine's forces.

The message read: 'In the area Torez we just hit down An-26, it's lying somewhere in the mine "Progress".

'We warned you- do not fly in "our sky". And here is the video confirmation of the "bird dropping".

'Bird fell fell near the mine, the residential sector was not disturbed. Civilians are not injured.'

Obama took 27 seconds out of his busy trip to buy a burger to say this "MAY" have been a tragedy.

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia Airlines (MAS) have confirmed that there were 298 people onboard flight MH17 and not 295, as earlier reported.

As opposed to an earlier statement, the airline confirmed Friday that MH17 was carrying 283 passengers, including three infants of various nationalities, and 15 Malaysian crew members. The nationalities of some of the passengers are yet to be determined.

The list of passengers and crew according to nationality are as follows:

Netherlands 154

Malaysia 43 (including 15 crew and 2 infants)

Australia 27

Indonesia 12 (including 1 infant)

United Kingdom 9

Germany 4

Belgium 4

Philippines 3

Canada 1

Unverified 41

A Malaysia Airlines plane en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur has crashed in eastern Ukraine. There were 283 passengers and 15 crew members on board the Boeing-777 aircraft.

Pilots and cabin crew of Dutch Airline KLM laid flowers at the MH17 memorial at Schiphol International Airport in Amsterdam, Saturday. Commercial Director of Malaysian Airlines Hugh Dunleavy also paid his respects to the victims of the tragedy.

The Netherlands is "angry, furious" by news that bodies were being dragged around the site where a Malaysian airliner crashed in eastern Ukraine, Dutch Foreign Minister Frans Timmermans said.

"We are already shocked by the news we got today of bodies being dragged around, of the site not being treated properly... People are angry, furious," he said meeting Ukraine President Petro Poroshenko.

"Once we have the proof, we will not stop before the people are brought to justice. Not just the people who pulled the trigger but also those who made it possible. I think the international community needs to step up its efforts in this respect," he added.

15:14 GMT:

Mourners from around the globe leave flowers, candles and stuffed animals for the victims of the MH17 crash in Ukraine. In Amsterdam's airport where the plane took off, to the small flower shop that two of the victims owned, people pay their respects to those who died.
