LAX Gunman Kills TSA Officer Before Taken into Custody

Quote
gunman armed with an assault rifle entered a terminal at Los Angeles International Airport today, killed a TSA agent, penetrated deep into the terminal before he was captured by police.

Six other people were injured in the incident.

Th e shooting sent hundreds of passengers streaming out of the terminal with many fleeing onto the airport runway. Dozens of flights to and from the airport were delayed or cancelled. It also triggered a "tactical alert" for the Los Angeles Police Department.

The shooting began around 9:20 a.m. in the usually crowded terminal.

Police Chief Patrick Gannon said the shooter was armed with an assault rifle, blasted his way past airport screeners and "got back very far into the terminal."

Police "tracked him through the airport... and engaged him," Gannon said, eventually taking him into custody.

The FBI quickly took a lead role in the invesitgation.

Witnesses described the shooter as a young man, carrying a long-rifle and seemingly targeting TSA officers.

One of the shooting victims was a TSA officer who died of his wounds. Six others were injured and taken to nearby hospitals.

"One arrived in critical condition and two are listed in fair condition," a spokesman from Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center said in a statement.

Three other patients were taken to other hospitals.

The LAPD said it was on "tactical alert due to a major incident" at the airport and the fire department said they were assisting at a multi-patient incident.

Police said they believe there was only one gunman, but are sweeping the terminal and surrounding areas as a precaution.

LIVE UPDATES: LAX Shooting

An eyewitness, Leon Saryan, told ABC News Radio that a "fairly young" gunman with a rifle came down a corridor in Terminal 3 and shot perhaps 20 times.

A TSA officer holding Saryan's shoes was shot and wounded, he told ABC.

Saryan said the gunman asked him, "Are you TSA?"

"He saw me. He looked at me with a quizzical look and said, 'TSA?' And I just shook my head. So he moved on," Saryan said.

Terry Malloy, who was in the airport at the time of the shooting, told ABC News she heard at least three shots fired.

"I was sitting there, and I heard the alarm go off like when the door opens. I saw all these people charging down this ramp going in a million different directions. Everyone started looking at each other (like) what are we going to do, and I saw the ticket agent go behind the counter, and then I heard shots," Malloy said.

"I ran out to one of the piers," she said. "Someone opened one of the doors, and then we literally ran right onto the runway. We saw airport police charging down the runway with their doors open," he said.

LA Times: TSA Agent and Gunman Dead In The Wake Of LAX Shooting

Quote
n response to Shooting at LAX Terminal 3; TSA Agent Wounded:

It's now being reported by the Los Angeles Times that a TSA agent was shot and killed at the passenger screening checkpoint, this morning at LAX. The gunman is also reportedly dead and is believed to have been a TSA employee at LAX. Sources from the LA Police Dept. said "they don't believe the suspect was tied to any known terrorist groups."

The LA Times has live-streaming news coverage, here.

MORE about the shooter via NY Daily News:

?It was surreal,? Tom Lagos, who saw the alleged gunman, told the Daily News. ?My wife and I were waiting for our flight to Newark at Gate 33 in the Virgin terminal, and we just saw a stampede of people headed in our direction with incredible fear in their eyes.?

Lagos said several TSA agents opened emergency exits so bystanders could escape on the tarmac. He said he helped his wife to safety, but turned back for their luggage ? and spotted the gunman stalking through the terminal.

?He was alone, wearing a lot of baggy clothes and a dark flannel shirt,? Lagos recalled. ?He was a slender, young white guy and walking with this long gun. It was so eerie. He wasn?t in a hurry, not really engaging anyone. He looked like he was moving in a methodical way.

Updates via the Los Angeles Times:

12:02 p.m.: Seven people treated by LAFD. Six transported to hospitals.

12:01 p.m.: LAX says some flights diverted to Ontario. Latest updates on flight schedule can be found on Twitter. @lax_official. Flights will be significantly delayed.

Suspect Paul Anthony Ciancia reportedly from from New Jersey...

Gunman opens fire at LAX, killing TSA worker and wounding others

Quote
man carrying anti-government material and an assault rifle shot his way through security at Los Angeles International Airport on Friday, killing one Transportation Security Administration worker, wounding as many as three others and sending terrified travelers diving for cover and fleeing onto the tarmac, authorities and witnesses said.

The gunman, identified by law-enforcement officials as 23-year-old Paul Anthony Ciancia, was shot by law enforcement and taken into custody in critical condition. The motive is not clear but it's believed he had anti-government views based on written materials he was carrying, the officials said.

Federal officials told NBC News it was unclear whether Ciancia was targeting the TSA or was trying to shoot his way through to get further into the airport. But one witness said the shooter, who calmly walking through the terminal with his weapon, approached him with a one-word question.

Suspect shot, in custody at Los Angeles airport after TSA officer killed

Quote
os Angeles (CNN) -- A man "pulled an assault rifle out of a bag and began to open fire" Friday morning in Los Angeles International Airport, killing one person and injuring others before being shot and taken into custody, police said.

The suspected gunman was pursued through Terminal 3 and shot in the chest multiple times before being taken into custody, according to an intelligence officer briefed by Los Angeles police.

Officials haven't released his name, though law enforcement sources told CNN that he is a 23-year-old man with addresses in Los Angeles and New Jersey. The sources stressed that this information is preliminary.

Investigators have found materials and information on the shooting suspect expressing anti-federal government sentiment and anger at the Transportation Security Administration, a federal law enforcement official said.

The person killed was an officer with the TSA, that agency said. One

Do you know what the 'anti-government literature' that is being reported, is???

He was wearing fatigues and carrying a bag containing a hand-written note that said he "wanted to kill TSA and pigs," the official said, who was briefed at LAX on the investigation and requested anonymity because was he was not authorized to speak publicly.

Alleged LAX gunman identified as Paul Ciancia from Pennsville, New Jersey

Quote
CHopper 6 HD was over the Salem County home of the Ciancia family on Friday evening where a police presence could be seen.

Action News has also learned that Ciancia's brother received a text message from him earlier in the day that was 'worrisome.'

Because of that, Ciancia's father called the Pennsville police chief, who reached out to authorities in Los Angeles.

However, that contact was made after the shooting had already happened.

Los Angeles police Assistant Chief Earl Paysinger said the gunman was apparently wounded following an exchange of gunfire with officers and was in custody.

(Editor's Note: ABC News previously reported the gunman had died, but has since said there are 'conflicting reports' about his condition and can no longer confirm he died.)

Tim Kauffman, a spokesman for the American Federation of Government Employees in Washington, confirmed Friday that a Transportation Security Administration officer was killed. Kauffman said the union's information comes from their local officials in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Airport Police Chief Patrick Gannon said that at about 9:20 a.m., the gunman pulled what he described as an "assault rifle" from a bag and began firing inside Terminal 3. He then went to the security screening area, where he fired more shots and went into the secure area of the terminal, Gannon said.

Officers exchanged fire with the gunman and apprehended him; police believe he was the only shooter, Gannon said. "As you can imagine, a large amount of chaos took place in this entire incident," he said.

Six people were taken to the hospital, the Los Angeles Fire Department said. It's unclear whether the gunshot victims were among the group.

Some passengers who already had cleared security rushed onto the tarmac to evacuate, while others were locked down in airport restaurants and lounges. The airport was being swept as a precaution and the bomb unit was on scene.

LAX Shooting: Paul Ciancia, suspected gunman in airport attack, sent suicide-related text to family, police chief says

Quote
(CBS/AP) LOS ANGELES - Paul Ciancia, the 23-year-old man identified as the Los Angeles airport shooting suspect, had apparently made references to suicide in a text message sent to a family member of his earlier Friday, a New Jersey police chief says.

Pennsville Township Police Chief Allen Cummings says Ciancia's father called him early Friday afternoon saying another of his children had received a text message from his son Paul "in reference to him taking his own life."

Cummings says the elder Ciancia asked him for help in locating Paul. The chief says he called Los Angeles police, who sent a patrol car to Ciancia's apartment.

There, two roommates said they had seen him Thursday and that he was fine.

Cummings says he told Ciancia's father that because of the son's age, he couldn't take a missing persons report. He says his department had no dealings with the younger Ciancia.
