Quote from: Khaleej Times
PRETORIA - Four South Africans were arrested in the capital Pretoria for trying to sell a low-radiation industrial nuclear device, police said Saturday, insisting the incident had no link the World Cup.
‘Four people were arrested, all South Africans, they were trying to exchange or sell this particular device,’ said Musa Zondi, spokesman for the elite investigative unit known as the Hawks.

‘It’s not World Cup related at all, it’s just a crime,’ he said.

They were arrested Friday at a garage in a sting operation that included a police helicopter, he said.

The origin of the device is still under investigation, he said. Pretoria is a major producer of nuclear medicine used to treat some cancers.

‘As a device, it’s harmless unless someone opens it and even then, you would have to sit on it for hours’ to be at risk, Zondi said.

It sounds like it was likely some essentially harmless, cheap, and rather common industrial or medical meter, such as a process flow meter.  I'd even venture to agree that it really wasn't related to the World Cup, except possibly for the factor that the fools may have thought the value might be a bit more at that time.

What brought this too my attention was the incident from a few years back (07-08?)when a South African Nuclear Power Plant was "raided by common thieves, looking for lap tops to pawn".  Or so the story went, when a commando team used very specialized equipment to breach the outer 10,000 volt security fences without activating the motion sensors.  Than proceeded to access and disable a highly advanced perimeter security system, without it sending any alarms in, or lack of alarm capabilities.  Than managed to zig zag through the inner security area, bypassing multiple heavily armed security teams on routine patrols.  Followed by their hacking into the outer security systems of the emergency control command center building.  Gaining access, and through the maze of corridors to the operational control room.  Engaging the guard who was there in combat, whom incidentally wasn't supposed to be there at that time.  Than ran off, once their discharged firearms activated alarms.  Proceeded to make their way out of the building, past armed response teams, and back to their entry point at the outer security fence which was being guarded by another commando team, who helped with their escape.

I'm still shocked by the sophistication, skill sets, and capabilities of common crooks in South Africa!  Hell, for all that trouble, attempting to steal and pawn for a few hundred a common lap top... That, my friend, takes dedication!  That is, if you believe the official report  :Smiley
