Department of Defense setting up free, emergency gas stations in NYC metro areaGov. Cuomo says the Department of Defense will set up emergency mobile fuel stations at five locations around the New York City metro area.
Free gasoline will be distributed, with a 10-gallon per-person limit, Cuomo announced at a briefing today. Cars and emergency service vehicles will be able to fill up directly from the 5,000-gallon trucks.
8 million gallons of gas has been delivered in New York he said, and another 28 million gallons is on the way.
"Fuel is on the way," Cuomo said. "Do not panic. As lights have begun flickering on in Lower Manhattan, residents of the Rockaways in Queens continued struggling without power, heat or food for a sixth day as their neighborhood slowly descended into chaos.
With little police presence on the storm-ravaged streets, many residents of the peninsula have been forced to take their protection into their own hands, arming themselves with guns, baseball bats and even bows and arrows to ward off thugs seeking to loot their homes.

FEMA Out of Water, Delivery Expected MondayFEMA's vaunted "lean forward" strategy that called for advanced staging of supplies for emergency distribution failed to live up to its billing in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
In fact, the agency appears to have been completely unprepared to distribute bottled water to Hurricane Sandy victims when the storm hit this Monday. In contrast to its stated policy, FEMA failed to have any meaningful supplies of bottled water -- or any other supplies, for that matter -- stored in nearby facilities as it had proclaimed it would on its website. This was the case despite several days advance warning of the impending storm.
FEMA only began to solicit bids for vendors to provide bottled water for distribution to Hurricane Sandy victims on Friday, sending out a solicitation request for 2.3 million gallons of bottled water at the FedBizOpps.gov website. Bidding closed at 4:30 pm eastern.

"We are gonna die here!" she screams, seemingly to a pool of TV cameras. This is the image CBS, MSNBC, and other news outlets showed you of Donna Solli begging for assistance:  What you don't see, what the media didn't show you, was who she was really talking to. She wasn't desperately begging the TV stations for help. She wasn't begging a faceless bureaucrat from FEMA for help. Take a look who she was pleading with and complaining to for the lack of efficient delivery of much needed relief:

Since FEMA and the politicians are total FAIL they call the military. :  All they had to do was allow the gas price to locally fluctuate and they would have more gas being trucked in than they could ever use, without the military. Military gas stations? Ridiculous, how about giving some generators to the gas stations that already exist? |

Government tells public to stay away from free gas until after first responders fuel upNEW YORK (AP) — The government says the public should stay away from free New York fuel stations until emergency responders get their gas.
Long lines of vehicles and pedestrians formed Saturday after Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that the U.S. Department of Defense was opening the mobile fuel stations in New York City and on Long Island.

Thursday Report: Bloomberg Wouldn't Let Guard Into Brooklyn Over Their Possession of GunsA Philly.com report tells us that "National Guard plays key role in N.J. relief efforts." The LA Times has reported that "More than 10,000 National Guard troops in 13 states have been mobilized to assist in the response to Hurricane Sandy, including more than 2,200 who are assisting with recovery efforts in New York." Guard troops are also in New York City to some degree (Mayor Michael Bloomberg says "We have 13 distribution sites opened, staffed by National Guard members"), including hard-hit Staten Island.
But at least as of Thursday, according to Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, as reported by Eli Rosenburg at the the Brooklyn Paper, which calls itself the borough's "leading news media," the mayor has refused a request to allow the Guard into the borough. Based on resource deployment priorities, the Mayor's refusal could be justified. But wait until you see the actual reason Bloomberg gave for his refusal, one which you might think would have received more media attention by now (bolds are mine): more here
