House Ethics Committee will not charge Rep. Maxine Waters with any violationsThe House Ethics Committee will not charge Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters with any violations following a lengthy and contentious probe into whether she improperly aided a minority-owned bank where her husband owned $350,000 of stock during the 2008 U.S. financial crisis.
The decision clears the way for Waters to seek the top Democratic spot on the House Financial Services Committee in the next Congress.
Mikael Moore, Waters’ chief of staff, was issued a letter of reproval for three ethics violations, including bringing discredit on the House. The reproval letter is the lightest sanction available to the panel, and it does not require the House to vote on the charges.
In charging Moore, the Ethics Committee went against the findings of Billy Martin, an outside counsel brought in to handle the case. The panel did heed Martin’s recommendations on Waters herself.
