Griffey: All but 3 votes; Hall calls Piazza, too

Article date January 2016

Quote

NEW YORK -- The Mariners made Ken Griffey Jr. the first overall pick in the 1987 Draft. The following year, the Dodgers selected Mike Piazza with the 1,390th pick, in the 62nd round.

From those vastly different starting points, the two have arrived at the same place: Cooperstown.

Griffey and Piazza were revealed as the National Baseball Hall of Fame's Class of 2016 during a live show on MLB Network and MLB.com on Wednesday. Griffey is the first No. 1 pick to make it, while Piazza is the lowest pick to do so. And while Griffey fell short of being the first player elected unanimously by the Baseball Writers' Association of America, he was named on 99.3 percent of ballots (437 of 440), breaking the record of 98.84 percent set by Tom Seaver in 1992. Piazza received 83 percent (365 of 440) in his fourth year on the ballot.

Didn't know this. Griffey was fun to watch.

Yankees' Aroldis Chapman suspended 30 games for domestic violence incident

His suspension will begin before the Yankees' regular-season opener. However, Chapman can continue to participate in spring training.

Chapman, acquired from the Cincinnati Reds this past offseason, was accused of assaulting his girlfriend during an incident in October, when he also admitted to firing gunshots in his garage. He denied any physical confrontation with his girlfriend that night and isn't facing any criminal charges. However, he is subject to discipline from Commissioner Rob Manfred under MLB's new domestic violence policy. In fact, he is the first player to be suspended until the new policy.

In a statement released Tuesday (see full text below), Manfred said he "found Mr. Chapman's acknowledged conduct on that day to be inappropriate ... particularly his use of a firearm and the impact of that behavior on his partner. I am gratified that Mr. Chapman has taken

Where the top 100 prospects are starting the season

http://m.mlb.com/news/article/170971948/where-top-100-prospects-are-starting-season

Quote
The 2016 Minor League season began Thursday afternoon with the Hartford Yard Goats topping the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 5-4, in the Yard Goats' inaugural game. Fans can follow their favorite prospects' progress, tracking them throughout the 2016 season via MLBPipeline.com, Prospect Watch and MiLB.TV.

Of the prospects on MLBPipeline.com's Top 100 Prospects list to start the season, four -- No. 1 Corey Seager (Dodgers), No. 2 Byron Buxton (Twins), No. 14 Steven Matz (Mets) and No. 34 Robert Stephenson (Reds) -- were on Opening Day big league rosters (Buxton graduated from the list after his first game). Four in the Top 100 are in extended spring camp awaiting assignment, one is serving a suspension and five are on the disabled list. The remaining 87 have been assigned to Minor League rosters in full-season leagues that are getting started this week. A complete look at where the Top 100 prospects are starting the season appears at the end of this story.

Stacked levels

The 2015 season was known as the Year of the Rookie, and it's hard to imagine that this year's crop of prospects will approach that kind of impact. But the breakdown of the Top 100 list shows that there could be a pretty solid pipeline to the big leagues. Of the 87 full-season participants, there are 35 on Triple-A (Pacific Coast and International leagues) rosters, and the return of Jose DeLeon (Dodgers) and Kyle Zimmer (Royals) from the disabled list could push that to 37. Double-A (Eastern, Southern and Texas leagues) is next with 25, while the Class A Advanced level (California, Carolina, Florida State leagues) has 20 of the Top 100. The first full-season rung, Class A (South Atlantic, Midwest) accounts for seven.

First-week mayhem makes for a happy new year for baseball

http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/15158293/happy-new-year-baseball-2016

Quote
Baseball is awesome, isn't it? Here's how the already-insane 2016 baseball season roared out of the gates: Justin Verlander got a hit before Mike Trout. ... Kenta Maeda hit a home run before Jose Bautista. ... Mark Trumbo stole a base before Billy Hamilton. ... Jeff Francoeur drew a walk before Joey Votto.

If you saw this stuff coming, could you do me a favor and buy me a Powerball ticket? But even if you didn't, you might have noticed something:

It isn't last year anymore. How exactly can we tell? Because a bunch of crazy stuff has already happened!

A mere 56 of the 939 triples in baseball last season were hit by catchers. Who hit the first triple of 2016? Who else? A catcher, Francisco Cervelli.

Only 213 of the 20,647 runs scored last season were driven in by pitchers. Want to guess who drove in the first run of this season? Right you are. A pitcher, Francisco Liriano.

Cole Hamels faced 194 left-handed hitters last season -- and served up home runs to two of them. How did he kick off this season? By allowing homers to two of the first three left-handed hitters he faced -- because of course he did.

Shelby Miller could relate to that. He gave up three home runs to the first 254 hitters he pitched to last season as a Brave. What do you think happened to him in his first start as a Diamondback? He allowed three home runs in an inning -- in a span of 20 pitches. That's what.

But Ken Giles can top both of them. He allowed two home runs to the last 463 hitters he faced as a Phillie. Then he became an Astro. And how's that working out? He gave up home runs to two of the first six hitters he faced. How else?

Never, in any season in the live-ball era, had a hitter started a season by hitting a home run in each of the first three games -- and not bothering to mix in any singles, doubles or triples. How do you think this season begins? With Robinson Cano and the instant legend named Trevor Story both doing exactly that. You can't make this stuff up.

Joey Votto faced 217 different pitchers last year. Not one of them struck him out three times in any game. How did Votto's Opening Day go? He punched out three times -- against Jeremy Hellickson, a guy who hasn't had a double-figure strikeout game in five years.

We tend to think of the Royals as a team that doesn't need luxuries such as, say, extra-base hits to win. Except that last year, they played 10 games in which they hit nothing but singles -- and lost all 10 of them. What did they do on Opening Day against the Mets? They got nine hits. Zero were extra-base hits. And yessirree, they won 4-3.

Speaking of extra bases, on his way to a batting title last year, Dee Gordon never had one stinking game in which he lashed three extra-base hits. How many extra-base hits did he get on Opening Day this year? You know it: He had two doubles and a triple. Do the math.

Did somebody say "batting title?" According to the Elias Sports Bureau, there had never been an Opening Day game in baseball history in which both reigning batting champs showed up on the same field -- until this year, when Gordon and Miguel Cabrera faced each other and turned that into a defunct stat.
