we are bargaining away our nuclear arsenal in return for what? the russians are already incapable of producing or modernizing their nuclear weapons. and the president is being naive (for the zillionth time) if he thinks that our forbearing nuclear weapons will create any sort of a moral obligation on the north koreans or iranians to do the same. that's just not the way the world works. but it appears to be what he is thinking.
Obama: 'Quite close' on Russia nuke treatyCOPENHAGEN, Denmark, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- U.S. President Barack Obama says an agreement with Russia to reduce the two countries' nuclear stockpiles is "quite close."
Speaking Friday in Copenhagen, Denmark, while attending the U.N. climate change summit, Obama said talks with Russian officials to replace the original, The Washington Post reported.
"We are quite close to an agreement," the U.S. president said.
Without being specific, Obama said the agreement would be completed "in a timely fashion." But, citing "people close to the negotiations," the Post said White House officials indicated there appeared to be no breakthroughs during Obama's Friday talks in Copenhagen with his Russian counterpart, Dmitry Medvedev.
Officials from both sides told the newspaper negotiators will probably take a break in coming days and resume talks in January.
