Title: Has Michael Vick Paid His Debt to Society?
Post by: Wretched Excess on August 14, 2009, 07:12:42 PM
vick was just signed by the eagles.  has he paid his debt to society?  should he be allowed to pursue the big money that an NFL contract offers?

I think he has probably paid his debt to society.  he has fallen very far, and lost a very great deal.  I was close to "it remains to be seen", but I admit that I have always been a michael vick fan.  he was the most exciting player in the nfl when he got busted, and as a sports fan, I look forward to seeing his return.

Legally yes he's "paid his debt to society," but morally he's a repulsive human being.

I thought the NFL was right to say that yes he could play, but since I already don't like the Eagles, this is just a whopper of a reason to dislike them more.

edited to add:  since that's not an option, I didn't vote.

I think it remains to be seen.  what he did was almost unthinkable, but everyone deserves a second chance.  even michael vick.

I get your objection.  I will rephrase the question, then.

I can't come up with a proper reformulation of the question and the options.  just vote "no".  I think people will get your meaning.

Sure.  When the NFL said he could still play, I agreed with that decision, but hoped that no one would sign him at the same time.  Being out of prison is his second chance.

I know, I'm complicated like that.  LOL!

I took a stab at it.  I think it carries the meaning that Mia was trying to convey.

"readmitted to society" sounded odd.  I changed it to "forgiven".  it still has the general thrust of WE's original post, but Mia brought up a valid point that we probably need to consider.

Ahh, much better John!  Sorry, I just cannot forgive someone that promotes dog fighting.  It's just disgusting.

I think he paid his debt and then same, frankly. He served his time and the NFL is letting him play again.

He served TWO years in jail while Stallworth served 24 days for killing a human being.

Our justice system amazes me sometimes.

I say let him play.

Well, I do agree that our justice system is quite unfair sometimes.  I don't think the NFL commissioner should have prevented him from being signed, but at the same time, what he did is quite disgusting and I'm hoping he did learn a lesson about it (and not the lesson of, I need to hide things better).

Short and sweet answer:  Yes, he's paid his debt and should be allowed to pursue gainful employment, including the NFL.

Unsweetened answer:  Professional sports are an entertainment business.  His infamy which could attract fans or repulse them, will likely have an effect on his earnings and rightfully so.
