Woman shot in the head by Batman maniac survived thanks to rare brain defect that she didn't even know she had
One of the survivors of the Aurora movie theater shooting was shot four times- including once through her head- and survived because of a brain condition she did not know she had.
According to Petra Anderson's pastor, the 22-year-old student's survival a matter of divine medical intervention.
Pastor Brad Strait explained that a rare genetic defect which left the young woman with a small area of fluid running from the front of her brain to the back, and because the shotgun pellet that hit her in her nose travelled through said fluid, it missed her brain matter.
'The shotgun buck shot, maybe even the size used for deer hunting, enters her brain from the exact point of this defect,' Mr Strait wrote in a blog post about Petra's surgery.
'Like a marble through a small tube, the defect channels the bullet from Petra’s nose through her brain. It turns slightly several times, and comes to rest at the rear of her brain. And in the process, the bullet misses all the vital areas of the brain.'
The bullet was still lodged in the back of her cranium when she went in for the neurosurgery at a local Aurora hospital, but because of the defect, she is already showing clear signs of a remarkable recovery.
Petra grew up in Denver and returned to Colorado after graduating from the University of the Pacific's Stockton Campus in May with a degree in music composition.
