we need to start practicing for 2012 now.  "4 years of failed obama foreign policy".  but if eqypt becomes another iran, I am sure it will all just turn out to be george bush's fault.

From the perspective of a democracy fan, it would possibly be hard to not consider the next government of Egypt a "legitimate" one.  It still leaves a sour taste on the tongue to say, but would likely ring true in all actuality.

The Egyptian dictatorship, ahem emergency 30 year government, couldn't last much longer.  Hopefully, the change to a democratic-republic ushers in prosperity, peace, and a calming influence on the Middle East.

It seems the independent Egyptian military may be the greatest patriotic key to a peaceful resolution and future as possible.

ideally, the administration would have  been quietly encouraging the mubarak regime to hold elections while they could still enforced the public order.  condaleeza rice was making strides in that direction, and the obamites pulled the plug, presumably because it was "arrogant" to tell another country which form of government it should choose.  and a nobel peace prize winner can't very well be telling people what to do. :Smiley

A very fair assessment, perhaps ideal.  Although it would still be problematic.

mubarak could declare open elections for, say, six months from now.  that may be enough light at the end of the tunnel to placate the protesters.  but he doesn't seem to be inclined in that direction.

. . . oh, and it would buy enough time for things to settle down, and provide for a peaceful transition.  AND, it would perhaps flush the bad actors and extremists out into the open, since they only want chaos that they can manipulate.

The day he won the election we knew this was going to happen. Well the ones who questioned his Bill Ayers and  Wright connections. You do not go to a church for 20 years and not know what is going on. He was raised to hate this country and to take it down. This MB is all part of his upbringing.

he dedicated books to Wright. Wright "baptized" his children.

They were apparently pretty close.

I would have hoped so, but as it stands now, I'm not sure he'll even have an opportunity to allow six months before elections.  I am amazed at the professionalism of the military though, that really is an impressive amount of respect and restraint shown for the people of Egypt.  With their near independence of the government, a moderate and rational voice that's respected and widely admired may still exist within Egypt.

The Israeli press is having a field day about Hilary and Obama's abandonment of their ally in the Middle East, over petty political correctness.

The military does seem to be very restrained. I know we've been funding them forever and they have the good stuff but the professionalism makes me even more worried of the Muslim Brotherhood takes control because they will want to attack Israel.

If the Egyptian military is showing restraint, it can be for only two reasons.  Either they are really in control, sort of behind the curtain like the wizard, but seriously like the governments of Turkey and Pakistan, or they are totally powerless.  I vote for the first one, for it would more mirror the circumstances in most arab states, where the military dictates who will be the country's figurehead leader.

If was the military every time in Turkey deciding who would be the leader, with little to no opposition being allowed.

And get real, we can't get it right here in the USA, with people voting six times in the last couple elections, do we really believe democracy exists in such places like Russia, Iran, Turkey, Venezuela, etc.

Please, get real.

Democracy is absolutely against the Islamic religion, which dictates ONE LEADER, and ONE RELIGION.  No tolerance for political opposition or other religions.  Oh, and don't forget one of their other primary tenets...............
