Detroit Schools opens new police headquarters A high-tech, $5.6 million police headquarters for Detroit's public schools has opened, continuing the district's emphasis on improving safety for students and staff.
The American flag was raised Thursday over the 23,000-square-foot facility that also will serve as a command center for the 113-member department.
It took six months to build and allows the district to vacate a former car dealership that served as police headquarters for more than 40 years.
"With new, high-tech video surveillance and alarms, we will be able to respond more efficiently and effectively, creating safer campuses district-wide," Police Chief Roderick Grimes said.
Shootings have plagued the 74,000-student district.
