Wrongful-death actions brought against the federal government by the families of two 26-year-old women that lifer Stephen “The Rifleman” Flemmi testified he and gangland partner James “Whitey” Bulger tortured to death three decades ago will have their first hearing today since the U.S. Appeals Court reopened them in January.

U.S. District Court Judge William G. Young must decide whether lawyers for the U.S. Department of Justice were guilty of committing “intentional harassment” of the families during opening statements and cross-examination of witnesses in their 2009 civil trial, and whether the feds should therefore be punished by picking up at least $10,000 in attorney fees. Young awarded the money in 2010 after prosecutors said the victims “had a duty to protect themselves”
