He had stopped the Army of the Potomac cold as a Colonel at Bull Run. He was a major reason the Army of Northern Virginia won at Second Manassas. He was a presence at Fredericksburg, and a saviour at Antietam. For two years he ruled the Shenandoah Valley.

But at the height of his fame at the battle he was most famous for, Chancellorsville, General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson, was mortally wounded by friendly fire, and a week later, he died of pneumonia, with his last words being, "Let us cross the river and rest in the shade of the trees" Jackson, a deeply religious man, was pleased when his doctors told him he would die on a Sunday [doctors of the era being able to predict such things 2with great accuracy].

Jackson's body was buried at VMI, where he had been a professor before the war. But his amputated arm was buried near the place where it was taken off. So Stonewall is buried in two places at once.
